SDSC Hosts the 11th Annual Computing Institute for Scientists and Researchers

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) has announced that it will host its 11th Annual Summer Institute July 25 - 29, 2005. Held at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), the program will provide researchers with a solid introduction to the concepts and tools available in established and new technologies for the creation, manipulation, dissemination and analysis of large data sets.

"This year, the institute will give scientists and researchers the tools they need to handle the 'Extreme I/O' needs required by today's large data sets," said David Hart, institute organizer and Allocations Coordinator at SDSC. "These lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions led by experts from SDSC's staff and other institutions will introduce researchers to the technology that can help them reach their goals faster and more efficiently."

Sessions will cover the following topics (schedule subject to change):

• Using the SDSC environment
• Parallel input/output (I/O)
• HDF5 and NetCDF file formats
• Moving data across the TeraGrid
• Building and using data collections
• Introduction to database design
• SDSC Storage Resource Broker
• Data mining and workflows
• Data visualization
• Case studies of extreme I/O applications

Interested parties can apply for the SDSC Summer Institute online at http://www.sdsc.edu/user_services/training/register.html. Deadline for application is June 27, 2005, and space is limited. All applicants will receive an acceptance or rejection notice by July 11, 2005.

Travel stipends are available for qualified, matriculating graduate and undergraduate students at U.S. colleges and universities.
